Digital Negative

The digital negative is a key part of many alternative analogue processes these days and has revolutionised processes like cyanotype by the easy control the photographer now has over negative adjustment and production compared to traditional film negatives.

I run a workshop in this area. Upcoming ones are shown on my Workshop Page.

The production of digital negatives is not particularly difficult. Since there are so many variables in most of the processes that you use digital negatives with, such as cyanotype and salt printing, there is no substitute for testing your own workflow.

At the present time, the following choices are available for your digital negative films in Australia:

  • Folex Reprojet P, suitable for pigment and dye printers, in sheet and roll
  • Agfa Copyjet, suitable for pigment and dye printers
  • Both of the above are available from Folk’s Graphics, North Coburg, 9350 6446
  • Pictorico for pigment printers, handled by Sandstone Software
  • Paper negatives can then be oiled with any cooking oil (I’ve used olive oil) and then dried
